Norfolk Academic Guild is a homeschool collective in Norfolk, Virginia. We are fifteen families working together to foster a community of enthusiastic learners in academics and the arts. We meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays for classes, and outside the classroom for field trips, competition, and travel.
Our quiz bowl players have been National Beta Club Champions, our students have been National Merit Scholars, our artists have been state and national champions, and our writers have been Scholastic Art and Writing National Gold Medal Winners.
NAG quiz bowl teams have competed at the high school, middle school, and elementary school levels, in regional and national competitions including HSNCT and MSNCT, IPNCT, USABB, the National History Bee and Geography Bee, and Beta Club nationals.
We were Senior Beta Club National Champions in 2017, 2018, and 2019, and we are looking forward to this year's return to live tournament competition!
Quiz bowl tournaments teach great skills beyond the acquisition of academic knowledge: listening, logic, dedication, stress management, teamwork, stamina, and recall.
CLASSES
Norfolk Academic Guild is a homeschool collective providing a classical model framework to educate our students through group classes and at home. We facilitate education for three age groups: elementary, middle school, and high school. We gather twice weekly for long-form classes in humanities and sciences, and short-form classes or seminar-style topics like economics, philosophy, and current events. We have a theater company called the Frigate Players, a music performance group, and a sword dance team called the Frigate Blades.
Our students learn across the curriculum, both in their own homeschools and as part of Norfolk Academic Guild. Coaches and parents teach traditional classes in their academic fields, in a cooperative environment. Rigorous academic classes challenge our students, Beta Club and Girl Scouts inspire them to grow and serve, and fine arts experiences expand their horizons. Rotational, peer-led, passion-focused sessions give students experience in researching and presenting topics, practice in public speaking, and synthesizing personal learning with a collective knowledge base.
We are the Frigates, honoring our city's naval tradition.
